Cruze-ing to the Head of the Class
The 2011 Chevy Cruze compact sedan shakes up the segment.

With the arrival of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze sedan, the compact segment has a new benchmark. With stalwarts like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla in its sights, the Cruze is ready to climb to the top of the heap with a combination of style, space, quality, and fuel economy.

The spacious and snazzy Chevy Cruze’s interior and cargo dimensions rival some midsize sedans: 95 total cubic feet of passenger volume, and 15.4 cubic feet of trunk space. The ultra-quiet, acoustically tuned passenger cabin is a visual feast with Chevy’s signature wraparound design, soft-touch trim materials, multifunction steering wheel, top-quality switchgear, attractive LED-backlit instrumentation and supportive cloth or leather seats. Backseat passengers stretch out with 35.4 inches of legroom.

While the Cruze is affordable, there’s no compromise in keeping passengers secure. No compact sedan can compete with the Chevy Cruze’s suite of standard safety equipment. Every Cruze has a segment-best 10 airbags plus traction control, StabiliTrak electronic stability control with a rollover sensor, antilock brakes, collapsible pedals, rear child safety door locks and OnStar 9.0 with Automatic Crash Response.

Power comes from either a 1.8-liter Ecotec dual overhead-cam four-cylinder making 136 hp and 123 lb/ft of torque or a turbocharged 1.4-liter Ecotec DOHC four-cylinder delivering 138 hp and 148 lb/ft of torque at low rpm, letting it hustle around town with the feel of a 2.0-liter. More important, the 1.4L turbo will let the Chevrolet Cruze sedan get 40 mpg in its Eco trim, and over 500 miles of driving range between fill-ups. The two engines are mated to six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

The Chevy Cruze LS gets the 1.8L engine, a six-speed manual gearbox, all the aforementioned safety features, standard power windows and locks, power outside mirrors, remote keyless entry, a driver information center, a six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with AUX jack, XM Satellite Radio and 16-inch steel wheels. Stepping up to the Cruze 1LT upgrades to the 1.4L turbo, a six-speed automatic and offers 16-inch alloy wheels as an option. The Cruze 2LT goes even further, making the alloys standard and adding heated leather seats, six-way power adjustments for the driver, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, Bluetooth, a USB port with audio interface, steering wheel audio controls and a remote starter.

The fuel-stingy Chevrolet Cruze Eco will make you wonder why some folks buy hybrids. Optimized for maximum fuel efficiency, engineers looked at every possible aspect down to the car’s individual welding points to deliver the most-fuel efficient Cruze in the lineup. For starters, it sports 17-inch alloys wrapped in ultra-low-rolling resistance tires, weighs less and sits lower than its siblings do. The Eco also employs unique aerodynamic innovations like an automatic electronic air shutter system in the grille. At high speeds, the shutters close to reduce drag. Around town, however, the shutters open at low speed to enhance engine cooling. As a result, the Cruze Eco is expected to deliver 40 mpg on the highway, even with the punchy 1.4L turbo four as standard equipment.

The Chevrolet Cruze LTZ includes everything from the 2LT and adds 18-inch alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, automatic climate control, standard cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated outside mirrors and an ultrasonic parking assistance system.

Available options will include a nine-speaker 250-watt Pioneer premium audio system, and even an in-dash 40GB HDD navigation system with pause-and-play radio and a feature that lets you rip audio CDs to the hard drive or transfer MP3s to it from a USB storage device. That kind of tech in an economical compact sedan? It’s not too good to be true; it’s simply true. That’s the Chevrolet Cruze.

Want a sportier look? No problem! Chevy Cruze LT and LTZ models can be decked out with the RS Appearance Package, which adds more aggressive-looking front and rear fascias, molded rocker panels, a rear spoiler, foglamps and red “RS” badging. Inside, the instrument bezels in RS-Package cars are finished in upscale chrome trim.

No matter which 2011 Chevrolet Cruze (MSRP $16,995) model you choose, you’re getting class-leading style, safety and amenities along with outstanding comfort, power and fuel efficiency. In the ultra-competitive compact segment, the 2011 Chevy Cruze is now throwing the punches, and it’s looking to score a knockout.
