Pennington, president of the Soo Railroad, claims Thief River Falls as its county seat. As home of T he Soo Line RR Depot and Steam Locomotive #1024, Thief River Falls cherishes the historic Soo Line Railroad Depot, which was instrumental in molding Thief River Falls into the town it is today. Located on US Highway 59 in downtown, the Railroad is marked on the National Register of Historic Places. First developed as a lumber town, Thief River Falls was dependent on the Soo Line Railroads to bring commerce, increase town prosperity, and make it central to shipping wheat. From 1914 until 1967, the depot served as a hub for activity and travel almost 24 hours a day. At the apex of its use, around 13 passenger trains would go through the depot daily. When passenger service was terminated in 1967, the depot went through a period of silence. However, many citizens interested in preserving a chunk of Thief River Falls' history worked diligently on a fundraising campaign called "Save the Depot" to renovate, remodel, and restore the depot. The project was completed, and a Soo Class L-4, 2-8-2 MIKADO, the steam locomotive #1024, sits on permanent display outside the original and restored depot. The Depot, which now serves as the city hall, features historic photographic panels open for public viewing Monday through Friday during regular business hours. See machinery used to harvest fields and visit the carefully crafted exhibits for an in-depth look at the community's history. Thief River Falls and the Unique Name Thief River Falls, a city in and the county seat of Pennington County, has an interesting tale to accompany the unique name. Thief River Falls, commonly abbreviated at TRF, gets its name from the falls of the Red Lake River and its joining with the Thief River. The river's name is a loose translation of the Ojibwe phrase, "gimood-akiwi ziibi" that means "secret-earth river." The French erroneously translated the phrase to mean, "stealing river," thinking it referred to the way the stream washed out the banks. Later, the name was altered to "Thief River," and remains so to this day. So there you have it. The Community and Campus Band performs at least one concert each semester, as well as during convocations, commencements, etc. Every year, the UMC Jazz Band hosts a Swing Dance, Jingle Jazz Concert, and one featured concert with a special guest. And the UMC Choir holds two concerts annually, one each semester. They also perform for several community organizations, such as churches, community gatherings, and service organizations. The Pop Choir is a new campus club that performs more contemporary musical selections. Regardless of the specific concerts or choir performances you attend, you'll be more than pleased with the high-quality and unmatched caliber of the musical talent of the students at UMC. Crookston Civic Music League The Crookston Civic Music League brings a variety of musical entertainment each year to the Crookston area. As a non-profit organization, they work with adults, students, patrons, friends, benefactors, and co-sponsors to present outstanding concert events for the Crookston community to enjoy. They are currently in their 67th season of the popular Crookston Entertainment Series. All musical performances are held at the Crookston High School Auditorium, located at 402 Fisher Ave, at 7:00 p.m. in the evening. There are five upcoming concerts scheduled for 2021/2022. The Everly Set, October 21 The Everly Set, a tribute to the Everly Brothers, is made up of Sean Altman and Jack Skuller. The two-member band is heavily influenced by the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, and The Bee Gees, and they always put together a fun concert that resonates with the audience. Their concert features songs like "Bye, Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie," "Let It Be," and many more. Branden and James, November 9 Operatic tenor Branden James and cello virtuoso James Clark have become a brand name in the classical crossover music world. If you enjoy the music of Josh Groban, The Piano Guys, and Jackie Evancho, then you won't want to miss this remarkable performance. Since 2015, this cello and vocal duo has been reinventing the rules of classical music. Being unique and inspiring their audience draw people to their performances. James Clark, an Australian cellist, is an arranger, orchestrator, and concert pianist. Branden James, a native of California, has recently written his first book, a memoir titled "Lyrics of My Life." When you attend their concert, you'll hear familiar melodies such as "West Side Story Medley," "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," "Hallelujah," "Hotel California," and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Duo Baldo, February 8 This comedic duo of Italian pianist and American violinist has captivated the world through their musical performances. Based in Italy, Duo Baldo tours internationally, sharing some of their favorite melodies with a zany twist. Look forward to hearing astounding and breathtaking performances, including "It Ain't Necessarily So," "Hungarian Dance No. 5," "Tico Tico," and "Spanish Dance." Barron Ryan, March 25 The music of solo pianist Barron Ryan has been described as "classic meets cool." He studied at the University of Oklahoma and toured Israel as a piano competition winner. Ryan performs a mix of ragtime, jazz, and classical repertoire in his solo concerts. Along with being a musical entertainer, he's also a popular motivational speaker and educator. You'll be amused and delighted when you hear familiar tunes from Ryan, like "Blue Moon," I Want You Back," "The Entertainer," "Solace," and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough." Veritas, May 6 Veritas is a male vocal quintet that produces a wall of sound with their marvelous voices, backing tracks along with a cappella renditions. Although they've quickly become well known on the gospel circuit, Veritas also performs musical numbers from the opera, pops, Broadway, and classical genres. This five-person classical crossover vocal ensemble consists of three tenors, one baritone, and one bass, and performs classical numbers like "I Got Rhythm," "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," "You're the Inspiration," and "American Anthology." Grape Mill is a family business founded by the Halverson family in 2006 with 200 vines. Since then, community journalists have featured the winery in The Grand Forks Herald and The Exponent in East Grand Forks. In 2016, the Grape Mill Vineyard and Winery won a Gold Medal at the International Cold Climate Wine Competition (ICCWC) for their white wine made from the Brianna varietal. According to the Wine-Searcher.com grape varieties database, wines made from Brianna can be either dry or sweet, and the flavors can range from grapefruit to pineapple. Grape Mill's Brianna wine is on the sweeter side with pineapple, mango, and other tropical fruit flavors. Their Huntsville Red wine, a blend made from the Frontenac and Marquette grape varietals, also won a Bronze Medal in 2017. Their menu describes this wine as a semi-dry wine, light in tannings and rich in cherry flavor, with hints of American oak. The winery menu features eight other wines, including a semi-sweet Rosé called “Zeus,” named after and dedicated to a loyal canine companion who's been at the vineyard and winery since 2006, when the business began. “Summer Breeze,” another Rosé, is on the dryer side, and the Sommelier recommends this Brianna, Frontenac, and Frontenac Blanc blend for holidays, due to its cherry and cranberry notes. If you enjoy dry wines, try the Marquette, Frontenac, or Frontenac Blanc. Even if you prefer dry wine, we recommend you order a wine tasting for $5 and try the semi-sweet Bygland, a blend of the Brianna and Frontenac Blanc with a hint of La Crescent, which adds a little acidity to balance the mix. In the fall, volunteers help pick grapes from the vineyard on a Sunday, and the Halverson family provides complimentary food and wine for all volunteers immediately following a two-hour harvest. Doesn't that sound like a great date idea? The winery also offers live music events and periodically hosts partner eateries that pair their items nicely with the wines. After 13 years of operating a booming pizza business with multiple North Dakota locations, where they initially began serving craft beer, Winjum and Hendricks decided to take the leap and open up their own brewery in the historic Metropolitan Opera House in downtown Grand Forks. The two friends met in high school and dreamed of opening up a brewery even back then. When choosing craft beers to serve at their pizza restaurants, they purposefully chose draft beers that weren't readily available in the region because they wanted to introduce the community to unique products. They eventually joined the craft beer brewery boom happening around the country in 2015. The name Rhombus Guys comes from back when they were 18 and had begun their first business. They had named the business Smoothie Rhombus—an inside joke that poked fun at the homemade construction of the smoothie stand, which wasn't square. People started calling them the Rhombus Guys. It's stuck for more than 20 years now. The historic location had sat vacant for over 15 years after a flood in 1997. The Historical Society gave the Rhombus Guys an award for the work they put into remodeling the space. Taking a tour of the facility is worth the trip from Crookston. Once you come out to Grand Forks and try the craft beer, you won't regret it. We've heard so many people say they like every beer they try from the Rhombus Guys! We recommend the Peace Garden IPA if you like hoppy beer and the Nut Job if you're into dark and malty brews. With “Welcome to the Family” as their slogan, it's no wonder that Half Brothers Brewing Company's concept is built around community, family, and friends. The brewery makes it their mission to promote art and culture in the community. Whether it's collaborating with the North Dakota Museum of Art to create interesting packaging for the Western Pilsner or hosting live musicians in the Taproom, you're sure to find something uniquely inspiring to see at this brewery. The Half Brothers Brewing website places emphasis on explaining why hiring friendly and knowledgeable staff matters. Not only will you get to taste food from some of Fargo's favorite eateries, but you'll also get interesting tidbits about Fargo's history and ever-changing culture. You'll also get plenty of exercise on this three-hour guided tour. The tour starts at 11 a.m. in front of the historic Fargo Theatre, and your first stop is at Sandy's Donuts, where you'll sample special donuts. The next stop is at the Boiler Room, where you can try their famous Scotch eggs. Savor grilled cheese sandwiches at Teddy's Eatery & Parlor, formerly known as Rosey's Bistro & Bar. As you walk off some of the samples you've had so far, you'll learn about several of the town's past characters and how they added depth to Fargo's history. Everyone loves ice cream, and the next stop on this food tour is The Silver Lining Creamery — Fargo. Then, you and your fellow walkers will sit down at a long communal table to enjoy traditional German beers and food at Wurst Bier Hall. Cabin Road features handcrafted coffee, teas and herbal infusions, and a menu for goodies to go with your beverage that's ever-changing. There's also a fireplace and blankets to keep warm with during the fall and winter. We love the Cabin Road concept, except for one downside: limited hours. Currently, the Cabin is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. only, and they will be closed for a few days in September. Walk the Trails in Grafton Grafton Parks & Recreation at 715 West 5th Street offers several perks to the Grafton community and visitors, like a public pool and several other activities across a network of parks. However, we highly recommend walking the trails after you've broken your fast. If, in your previous stop, you picked coffee over sit-down breakfast, our friends at Cabin Road Coffeehouse can give you local's insight on Grafton's trails. Otherwise, check out the map on the Grafton Parks & Recreation website. Alternative: Bring Your Furry Pal to Happy Trails Bark Park Sure, Grand Forks already has a couple of dog parks where you can take Fido. However, it's always nice to know we can find things to do with our furry friends. Happy Tails Bark Park is a doggie park that separates their fenced-in off-leash areas by your dog's weight. The Big Paws Field is for dogs that weigh 30 pounds or more, and the Wiggly Field is for furry buddies under 30 pounds. Please make sure always to supervise children within the dog park and pick up after your pet. Check out the other park rules on the Grafton Parks & Recreation website before you visit. Find the Bark Park at 819 West 5th Street. If You'd Rather Spend Your Day Golfing You might not be in the mood for breakfast, coffee, or exploring Grafton's trails. If that's the case, and you're into golf, visit the Fair Oaks Golf Course. Find it at 30 Golf Course Road in Grafton. The course includes nine holes spanning 2,900 yards of beautifully manicured grass. The Fair Oaks Golf Course Club House menu features sandwiches, burgers, fries (potato or sweet potato), and other goodies. You can expect to pay around $10 to $15 per person to eat, and daily rates for the course in 2021 are $14 for nine holes and $28 for 18 holes. You can also rent a cart for $14 on the nine-hole and $24 on the 18-hole option. Fair Oaks does not have a website, but you can find them on Facebook or call 701-352-3956. Their hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, except for Friday when they close at 10 p.m., according to their Facebook page. Daily admission is $5, but what we like most about this public pool is the possibility of renting it for $75 an hour. We especially like the pool at Collette because they post a pool calendar on their Facebook page that shows which days it will be closed for cleaning. Neither Leistikow Park nor Collette Fitness Center advertises any concession stand or eatery near the pool, so we recommend planning for a nice energy-replenishing meal after your time swimming. The prices are reasonable with generous portion sizes, with noodle bowls that are often large enough for two servings. Jade Dragon has many vegetarian and vegan dishes on the menu, and the fried tofu always leaves customers craving more. You'll find Jade Dragon at 1015 Main Ave. in Fargo. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is closed on Sundays. Himalayan Yak Upon your first visit, Himalayan Yak may immediately become your favorite Indian restaurant. Himalayan Yak features authentic Nepali and Indian cuisines. Most menu items are vegetarian, although they do have a selection of meat entrees. One of the popular meat dishes is the Himalayan Mixed Grill, which consists of chicken, lamb, and beef kabobs. Tikka Masala, which is tender meat in a creamy tomato sauce, is highly praised by customers. Everything is delicious, like the many varieties of naan, the tender lamb dishes, and the chai tea. Thai cuisine emphasizes a combination of delicious flavors and aromas and stimulates all five taste senses of sweet, sour, hot, salty, and neutral. Recommendations to try are chicken satay, tom kha (coconut soup) and pad Thai. The avocado salad with ginger dressing and curry puffs are delicious choices, as well. Customers appreciate that you can choose your level of heat on a scale from one to five when ordering from the menu. The comfortable decor, lighting, and atmosphere make Sirirath Thai House an enjoyable environment for lunch or dinner. There are casual dining, drive-through, or delivery options. There are plenty of other seasonal recreational activities to enjoy there as well, such as camping and fly-fishing in the warmer seasons and sledding once the snow falls. Turtle River State Park has secluded campsites, picnic areas, an amphitheater, and a playground for the younger kids. The park features over 10 different trails for hiking or mountain biking, including some that travel through wooded and hilly areas and other flat trails that meander gently alongside the river. Two of the longer trails there are Raven Ravine and The Hollows. Raven Ravine is a 2.46-mile wooded trail along the river that features a spectacular photo opportunity at the water crossing on the northern end of the trail. It connects to the campground, amphitheater, and playground, and has an elevation gain of 89 feet. The Hollows trail is 1.74 miles long and runs from the park's visitor center to the Hillside picnic area. It also provides trail access to the Hollow's Bridge picnic area and parking lot. This trail winds through the hills and alongside the river. Greenway of Greater Grand Forks The Greenway of Great Grand Forks is a trail system of paved paths along the Red River and Red Lake River between Grand Forks, North Dakota, and East Grand Forks, Minnesota. The Greenway also provides access to over 20 miles of asphalt trails, as well as the 100-mile Rural Bicycle Loop. The Greenway's main loop is an 8.8-mile trail with an elevation gain of 187 feet. The trail links the two cities and states over a pair of bridges designated for nonmotorized use only. In addition to the trails, the Greenway has several parks, a campground on the Minnesota side, golf and disc courses, shore fishing sites, and boat ramps available on both rivers. Local shops offer rentals of bikes, kayaks, and other recreational equipment. Winter activities such as cross-country skiing and sledding and ice skating are also available on the Greenway. Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area If you're looking for a vast natural area with landscapes ranging from cliffs and valleys to flat prairies, wetlands, and forests, the 2,800 acres of the Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area has it all. There are 6.5 miles of hiking trails plus over 20 miles of multipurpose trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, or off-highway vehicle use. Other recreational activities are available, such as horseback riding or kayaking, including kayak rentals. The area has an elevation of 1,381 feet above sea level. Lady Slipper Loop and the Lady Slipper Extension are non-motorized trails ideal for hikers and cyclists that total about 6 miles of trails. The multiuse Three Sisters Trail adds over 20 more miles of paths to explore and allows the use of motorized dirt bikes, side-by-sides, and four-wheelers. Pipestem Creek Trail You can travel to Jamestown for several great trails near Pipestem Dam and Pipestem Lake. Pipestem Creek Trail is a challenging but thrilling mountain bike trail. There's a less difficult 3-mile outer loop suitable for biking or hiking, while the entire 8-mile trail features mowed trails in open grassy areas as well as rocky dirt trails through hilly woods with steep climbs and descents. There's a total elevation gain of 1,273 feet on the trails. Although Pipestem Creek Trail is in Jamestown, nearly 3 hours from Grafton, there are three other excellent nearby trails in Jamestown to check out. The North Ridge Trail, Splitrock Trail, and Overlook Trail are all fantastic bike trails. It would make a wonderful weekend getaway to visit all the trails and camp nearby. There are two good camping options in Jamestown, Lakeside Campground or Pelican Point Landing and Campground. The camping areas offer a wide array of activities including boating, kayaking, and fishing. There's so much to do in Jamestown, it's worth the trip for avid mountain bikers or nature enthusiasts. Lake Bronson State Park You can get from Grafton to Lake Bronsxzon State Park in Minnesota in about an hour's drive. This park has some great trails, including a 7-mile mowed trail to hike or bike that runs all the way around Lake Bronson. Although the path is named Around the Lake Trail, it's rather misleading since Lake Bronson is actually a reservoir. In addition to the Around the Lake Trail, there are also other trails to explore, including 5 miles of paved bike trails and 14 miles of relatively flat trails through the prairie and along the lake. Lake Bronson State Park has the largest observation tower in the state's park system where you can oversee the prairie and forests. The park offers horseback riding, fishing, swimming, and boating, so there are plenty of additional recreational activities to engage in. There's also camping so you can easily make Lake Bronson State Parke an enjoyable overnight getaway. The park is a Geocaching checkpoint and you can borrow free GPS units at the park office. The approximate elevation of Lake Bronson State Park is 1,001 feet above sea level.
