Grand Forks in North Dakota is located near the Minnesota border and East Grand Forks with which it shares a community across the north-flowing Red River of the North. They offer the only university Musical Theatre program in the state and you can catch the prestigious student shows. The Burtness is the main performance space of the UND Theatre Arts and seats up to 365 people in its proscenium theatre. The building also has a laboratory theatre with flexible seating, and costume and scenic shops. This is one of the premier theatres in the state with its student productions of original works. The Burtness Theatre was built in 1962 in the campus's collegiate gothic architecture style and features an imposing square red brick exterior surrounded by dark green shrubbery, tall trees, and a pleasant lawn. It is dedicated to and named after Olger Burtness who was a UND graduate in the early 1900s. However, updated sound and lighting equipment ensures you have a high-quality theatre viewing experience. The Burtness Theatre is located at 281 Centennial Drive on the central campus near the English Coulee River and the Celebrate Park with its Adelphi Fountain. Empire Arts Center and Theatre Company The Empire Arts Center is located at 415 DeMers Avenue in historic downtown Grand Forks. Its building was once the first purpose-built movie house in town, the New Grand theater, which opened in 1919 to enthusiastic crowds. Now the theater is a cultural center of the town and hosts the UND Art Collections Gallery which displays local artists alongside works by such acclaimed artists as Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, and Audrey Flack, plus historic art from back as far as ancient Egypt. The Gallery's hours are usually from 2-7 p.m. on Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The Empire Arts Center offers a variety of fun live shows where you can enjoy everything from musical acts to performances put on by the Empire Theatre Company which was formed in 2012 and showcases contemporary plays and musicals that you might not be able to see anywhere else in North Dakota. It's unique in that it's the only North Dakota theatre company to produce a full season of plays, usually having four or more over a theatre year that runs from August through June. At the Empire Theatre Company, you'll find talented performances by local and national professional actors. Fire Hall Theatre One unique theatre you will want to check out is the Fire Hall Theatre. This quaint 100-seat theatre is housed in the historic tan brick Number One Fire Hall in downtown Grand Forks. It was bought and renovated in the 80s to become the home of the Greater Grand Forks Community Theatre, one of the oldest theatre groups in the county. The GGFCT is a non-profit, entirely volunteer-run group. The Fire Hall Theatre survived a serious flood with three feet of water in 1997 due to the flat terrain of Grand Forks and the Fire Hall's location near the riverside. Besides being an important showcase for local community theatre the Fire Hall also offers a Children's Summer Camp where kids can learn and have fun acting with peers who share their interests. A month of rehearsals will end in two days of performances. The cost is $75 for elementary kids who will be rehearsing two days a week and $125 for middle school kids entering who have camp from Monday to Thursday. The Fire Hall Theatre is located at 412 2nd Avenue North by the Grand Forks High School and just minutes from the Red River of the North waterfront. Chester Fritz Auditorium The Chester Fritz Auditorium is another theatre of the UND. It was built in the 1960s, partly with a $1 million donation by Chester Fritz, a proud UND alumni and international financier. The rest of the money for this distinctive auditorium came from state and private funding. On October 12, 1972, the auditorium held its first event, a performance by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Choir. Since then it has played host to a large variety of shows from country-western to ballet, opera, and symphonies, as well as prestigious Broadway Theatre shows, and local UND events. The Chester Fritz Auditorium is a grand building with over 2,300 red seats, and in the lobby you'll find the Italian-made Starcher Chandelier with about 30 lamps and over five thousand prism, bead, and teardrop crystals. The Auditorium is a center for the performing arts that is one of the finest facilities for several stares around and brings many nationally acclaimed performers to its stage and photos of past performers line the halls. At the Chester Fritz Auditorium you can enjoy some world-class shows not usually found in North Dakota. It is located at 3475 University Ave Stop 9028. Our local nature trails are great places for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, all while enjoying Minnesota's beautiful natural scenery. Take the whole family out for a hike on any of these Crookston favorites: Kreutzberg Trail: This trail has a natural surface and is perfect for hiking in the summer months and cross-country skiing in the winter months. Castle Park Trail: Take a stroll on this natural surface trail. Castle Park Trail is also the home of Crookston's popular Story Walks for kids. Story Walks allow kids and their families to walk through the pages of a book as they follow a trail. Aunt Polly Trail: The Aunt Polly trail is a natural surface trail used for hiking and cross-country skiing. Fisher Trail: This short trail offers a quick walk and some fresh air. Veterans Military Memorial Loop: This paved trail is a great place to enjoy a walk or ride your bike. The trailhead is at the intersection of US Highway 2 and Fairfax Avenue. This looping trail features life-size monuments and lots of beautiful natural scenery. Flags line this walkway on special occasions and holidays. A picnic shelter is also available. Red River Valley Natural History Area Less than a mile from Crookston, the Red River Valley Natural History Area covers 85 acres of ancient Lake Agassiz. Although it is primarily used as a living laboratory by the University of Minnesota, the public is always welcome to hike on the natural surface trails. The Red River Valley trails wind through several habitats, including cottonwood forest, willow swamp, cattail marsh, aspen forest, and prairie. The Red River Valley trails are also a great place to go birdwatching. Tympanuchus covers 840 acres of beautiful natural grasslands, including flowers like the purple coneflower and blazing star. Hiking trails run along the beach ridges of ancient glacial Lake Agassiz. In addition to hiking, many visit Tympanuchus to look for birds, including prairie chickens. A parking lot is available for easy parking and access to the area. Agassiz Recreational Trail The Agassiz Recreational Trail is best known for its scenic views of the Wild Rice and Sand Hill Rivers. This 52-mile trail runs along abandoned railroad tracks and alternates between densely wooded areas and wide-open farmland. Hikers often see lots of native wildlife along the Agassiz trail. The trail is a natural surface, including grass, dirt, and gravel. In addition to hiking, Agassiz Recreational Trail is a great place to ride your bike, horse, off-road vehicle, or snowmobile. Restrooms and picnic shelters are available at regular intervals along the trail. A large campground is at the trail's midpoint. In addition to using the trail for recreation, many use the Agassiz Trail to get to other towns from Crookston. The Agassiz Recreational Trail connects Crookston to Ulen, Twin Valley, Fertile, and Gary. Parking and trail access is available in Ulen off Highway 32 and at the intersection of Highway 102 and 9. Belgium Wildlife Management Area Belgium Wildlife Management Area has several ridge trails on its southern end. Belgium offers the opportunity to explore 190 acres of grasslands, marshes, and forests. Many migratory birds, waterfowl, deer, and other woodland animals make their home in Belgium. If you visit at the right time, you can also pick native berries, such as grapes, choke-cherries, and thorn apples. Be sure to bring knee or hip boots if you plan on exploring the marshes in Belgium. You can easily access the Belgium Wildlife Management Area via township roads. Greenway of Greater Grand Forks The Greenway of Greater Grand Forks offers over 21 miles of paved trails, including a 10-mile loop that provides easy access to other nature trails in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. Trail endpoints are in Grand Forks' Riverside Park and East Grand Forks' Folsom Park. The Greenway trails are a great place to bike, inline skate, walk, and cross-country ski. Bicyclists can also use the Greenway trail to access the 100-mile paved Rural Bicycle Loop in Grand Forks. Kiosks along the Greenway provide information on the history of the area, geologic features, and wildlife. In addition to the trails, Greenway has playgrounds, picnic areas, fishing spots, campgrounds, and golf courses. The Greenway is easy to jump on, with more than 10 access points available. There are also 11 restrooms and 14 parking areas along the trails. All trails in the Greenway are wheelchair accessible. Sand Hill Recreation Area The Sand Hill Recreation Area is just down the road in Fertile. Sand Hill offers over 12 miles of trails used for hiking in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. Several horse riding trails also accommodate snowmobiles in the winter. Sand Hill also has 3 miles of specially designated snowshoe trails. Visitors to Sand Hill can enjoy the beautiful panoramic views from Scout Tower, the ever-changing dunes, brightly colored wildflowers, native birds, and stunning river views. Sand Hill Recreation Area has several easily accessible restrooms and a nature center. Snowshoe rentals are available at the nature center in the winter months. Bottineau Trail Named after Pierre Bottineau, a Minnesota frontiersman, this 3-mile trail runs through the town of Red Lake Falls on former train tracks. Bottineau's paved surface is perfect for hiking, biking, snowmobiling, hiking, and cross-country skiing. The southern portion of the trail passes through residential and industrial properties. The northern end of Bottineau runs through a densely forested area. The Bottineau trail includes two old railroad bridges that cross over the Red Lake and Clearwater Rivers. Restrooms, picnic tables, and camping sites are available. Trail access is via Riverside Park. There you have our top pics for scenic trails near Crookston. Members gather at 31 E. 7th St. to participate in curling matches for all ages and skill levels. The club participates in a men's league with two games on Tuesday evenings and a women's league with one game on Thursday evenings. As of May 2021, one-year dues for each section include the following: New Member: $100. Men's League: $205. Women's League: $155. Junior Curler: $50. Grand Forks Lions Club This group is part of the national Lions Club International, which is the world's largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members found throughout 46,000 groups. Officially chartered in 1922 with 34 members, the Grand Forks Lions Club serves the community and beyond through its motto of "We Serve." Its primary mission since its inception is to provide service to the blind as well as bring about awareness to blindness prevention. The group meets on the first and third Wednesday at 12 p.m. at the VFW Hall in downtown East Grand Forks. Grand Forks Rotary The national chapter of the Rotary began in 1905 in Chicago by Paul Harris, who sought a way for other business people to meet with others and regularly exchange ideas and promote their vocations. Since it began, the Rotary has grown to more than 1,2 million members in more than 34,000 nationwide clubs. The Grand Forks Rotary unites members through club activities and service projects intending to share their passion for community service. Two projects the group has worked on include the following: Imagination Library: Although this is a nationwide program begun by singer Dolly Parton, the Grand Forks chapter contributes to this project. After a child is born, he or she receives one book each month until age 5. Currently, more than 1,100 communities in three countries participate in this program. Rotary Park: After a devastating flood hit the area in 1997, the Rotary began to raise funds to create and maintain the park. It sits in downtown Grand Forks on Greenway by the Sorlie Bridge. Some of the money raised went toward a gazebo, which guests can sit at during summer wedding ceremonies. Rotary Wraps: Begun in 1992, this project helps to provide new winter outerwear to disadvantaged children living around the greater Grand Forks area. The group raises funds to purchase gift certificates from local merchants with more than $10,000 certificates distributed annually. Kem Shriners As the local chapter affiliated with Shriners International, Kem Shriners is a fraternity based on fellowship, fun, and the principles of brotherly love and truth. It has approximately 300,000 members from almost 200 chapters found in numerous countries. This chapter is based out of Grand Forks and serves the area in both Minnesota and North Dakota. It hosts events and fundraisers throughout the year, and some of its more popular ones include the following: Hospital Kids Christmas Party: Held on the first Saturday in December, this event begins with a Shrine Ceremony in the morning followed by a kids' party in the afternoon with a visit from Santa. The evening is capped off with dinner and dancing. Kem Shrine Circus: This family-friendly show is the perfect event for people of all ages. The troupe travels the country during the year, spending about one week in each city from January through November. For 2021, the circus will gather in Grand Forks from September 10 through 12. Potentate's Ball: This annual event occurs in June in which women and their dates dress in their finest attire to honor the Potentate and his Lady. Attendees enjoy dining and dancing. Kiwanis International - Grafton Founded in 1951, the Kiwanis International chapter in Grafton is part of the international chapter that raises $107 million annually to help improve the lives of children. The global club has more than 550,000 members scattered across 80 countries. Each community has different needs, so its members seek creative ways to serve the needs of these children. They do so through by combating hunger, offering guidance, and improving literacy. The Grafton chapter hosts events throughout the year to raise awareness and funds. One annual event it participates in is the Closest-to-the-Pin contest held at the Grafton Booster Golf Tournament. Northern Lites Archery Club As a charter member of the North Dakota Bow Hunting Association, the Northern Lites Archery Club strives to protect and preserve archery in the state. Begun in 1985, the group has changed locations over the years but now calls 37 1/2 E. 7th St. home. Typically, the group offers a league beginning in January that lasts approximately 11 weeks. It also hosts a youth league every winter for about four weeks. Beginners can try their hand at archery in the winter as the group brings in certified instructors to demonstrate the 11 steps of shooting archery. Most ages are welcome to the instructional course, but they must be able to draw a bow. Also, in the fall the group holds a Preseason Warm-Up Shoot at the outdoor range found north of the development center. Shooters of all ages are welcome to attend this event, which has a 3D target shoot. The Dell Steakhouse & Lounge The Dell Steakhouse & Lounge is located about 40 miles northwest of Thief River Falls in Argyle, MN. The Dell Steakhouse began as the Farmer Dell in 1977. Known today as "The Next Generation," the Dell has excellent steaks and burgers and a full-service bar. The Dell offers daily lunch and dinner specials and has a banquet room available for parties that seats up to 70 guests. The menu includes a wide variety of burgers, sandwiches, and other entrees such as broasted chicken and barbeque ribs. Walleye pike, fresh Atlantic salmon, and deep-fried or broiled shrimp will satisfy the seafood lovers in your family. The steak cuts include center-cut sirloin, filet mignon, New York strip, ribeye, or the delicious whiskey ball tip steak. Prime rib is available on Friday and Saturday nights. The entrees come with soup or salad and Cajun taters, French fries, or potatoes. Don't forget to save room for dessert. There are several delectable options, including chocolate lava cake, mud pie, Mexican fried ice cream, or apple tart with ice cream. You may want to try two and share! Sky's offers a formal restaurant or lounge seating. You'll have a selection of several hand-cut steak options including filet mignon with a gorgonzola cream sauce, New York strip steak with a green peppercorn sauce, or herb-crusted prime rib. Located in Crookston, MN, about 40 miles southwest of Thief River Falls, the Shanty opened in 1945. Over the course of many years and remodels, it has sustained its most legendary feature; a massive shamrock carved into the ceiling above the bar. The Shanty serves comfort food at affordable prices and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with over 70 different menu items. If you are looking for steaks, you can choose between prime rib, top sirloin, or rib-eye. There are several seafood options including jumbo shrimp, walleye, and wild Pacific salmon. Other menu items include ribs, 1/2 pound fresh ground beef burgers, and a large selection of sandwiches. There are a variety of desserts to choose from, but you can't go wrong with the Irish Cream pie, which is a white chocolate mousse pie made with Irish Cream. The Shanty has a banquet room that serves up to 65 people and a liquor store. It includes 785 acres of wooded parkland, numerous streams, and a walking trail that ends in a waterfall. If you'd like to camp in the park, you can stay in one of the 125 campsites, or rent the woodland lodge or one of the several group cabins. Larimore Dam Recreation Area Larimore Dam Recreation Area is only 30 miles west of Grand Forks. Here, you'll find 144 campsites, basketball courts, a swimming beach, and bike paths. If you want to explore the dam's outdoor scenery, you can look for the 500 different types of trees found within the park's 26 acres. The Greenway Another must-see for nature lovers is the Greenway, which includes around 2,200 acres of outdoor space along the banks of the Red and Red Lake Rivers. The Greenway is located between Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, making it easy for you to reach, and it's host to the annual Greenway Ski Day. Located just north of the Sorlie Bridge, The Boathouse on the Red offers rentals for canoes, paddleboards, and kayaks. Cross-Country Skiing and Skating North Dakota gets cold in the winter, which transforms the outdoors into the perfect terrain for skiing. Many of the walking and biking trails in the state parks around Grand Forks offer great opportunities for cross-country skiing. For example, the Bluebird Trail in Icelandic Park, which is just over an hour drive from Grand Forks, is a 0.46-mile route along the banks of the Tongue River that's perfect for a short cross-country skiing adventure. The 0.75-mile Hillman Trail is well-designed for snowshoeing in the winter. If you feel like a longer trip, take the 1.5-mile Old Settlers Trail, which is groomed for cross-country skiing each winter. Stop by Lincoln Drive Park in Grand Forks, North Dakota, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to play in the snow and enjoy some hot cocoa. During the event, you can participate in a ski clinic, find a hill to do some sledding, go ice skating, try some cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, and even ride in a horse-drawn sleigh. You can bring your own snow adventure equipment or plan to use the limited equipment available at the event. You won't want to miss this great opportunity to enjoy the snow with your family and friends. Art on the Red As far as outdoor festivals go, Art on the Red is considered one of the best in North Dakota. The festival began in 2001 and originally took place on the banks of the Red River, hence the event's name. Now, Art on the Red is located at University Park in Grand Forks, North Dakota, so be sure to swing by the park on the second full weekend in June. The festival features many artists, artisans, entertainers, and food vendors. Come to shop for handmade items, taste delicious food, and enjoy the live music and performances. Farmers Markets Town Square Farmers Market The Town Square Farmers Market is located in historic downtown Grand Forks, North Dakota. The market is open for three months in the summer, from late June to late September, so pass by Lyons Auto any Saturday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Farmers Market at Heritage Village In East Grand Forks, check out the Farmers Market at Heritage Village. This farmers market also features local produce and artisan products, so be sure to stop by and support your local community. The market at Heritage Village is open for two months at the end of summer, from late July to late September, so pass by every Wednesday evening between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to shop and socialize. Sertoma July 4th Festival and Fireworks The Sertoma Club of Greater Grand Forks puts on an amazing Independence Day celebration. During the day, the festival usually starts off with a 10K and 5K fun run followed by a kids parade. Then you can enjoy shopping among the food vendors, listening to the Grand Forks City band concert, and participating in the silent auction and kids activities. The fireworks show begins after dusk. The best part is that admission to the festival is free! If you want the chance to win a prize, simply purchase a $10 raffle ticket before or during the festival. The drawing usually takes place in the evening, and the Sertoma Club gives away several prizes. While specific prizes vary from year to year, the grand prize is usually a brand new car. Other prizes might include a cash giveaway or a family getaway. Heritage Days The Heritage Days celebration in East Grand Forks began as a centennial celebration in 1976. The next year, the celebration changed to Threshing Days, and in 1978, the annual event became known as Heritage Days. This free event happens every year in early August, right in Heritage Village. During the event, you can expect to attend a parade and a community dinner and enjoy live music and historical re-enactments. Don't forget to stop by the classic car show and witness the antique tractor pull. Vendors selling food or craft items will also be set up at the event, so support your local community by stopping by the booths. Potato Bowl USA If you love football and french fries, you've got to attend the annual Potato Bowl USA. The Potato Bowl USA began in 1966, and it features a football game between the University of North Dakota and their opponent for that year. Today, the Potato Bowl USA includes many events, games, and food-related activities throughout the week leading up to the football game. You can check out the Thomsen Homes kid's zone with your little ones, watch the KEM Shrine Potato Bowl parade, participate in Hugo's "Potato Bowl Plinko" game, and attend the world's largest french fry feed hosted by Simplot. There are many other events and activities throughout the week, so check the schedule to find which activities you can attend with your family and friends. HollyDazzle Festival of Lights In late November, visit downtown Grand Forks, North Dakota, for the HollyDazzle Festival of Lights. The festival takes place on a Sunday and features many holiday-related activities. In the afternoon, bring along the little ones to participate in the kids activities, decorate cookies and ornaments, enjoy a free carriage ride or holiday movie, make s'mores together, snap a photo with Santa or as a family, and watch local choirs perform. In the evening, watch the Parade of Lights and the HollyDazzle fireworks show. The HollyDazzle Festival of Lights is a great way to kick off the holiday season. Larimore, North Dakota, is a small town about 30 miles west of Grand Forks. It's rich in history and provides plenty of opportunities for year-round fun. Explore nearby parks and recreation areas, historic buildings, and learn more about the town. Many unique dining options await visitors as well. The crew here at Rydell Chevrolet GMC know of some must-see points of interest in the area that we'd like to share with you. more Larimore Dam Recreation Area Constructed in the late 1970s, the Larimore Dam Recreation Area features a swimming beach and a 72-acre pool that's open to canoes, paddleboats, and other nonmotorized boats. Anglers are out fishing year-round from either boats or ice houses, depending on the season. Several picnic areas are available, including two covered locations that may be reserved for special events. Before or after picnicking, you can enjoy the playgrounds and plenty of open space for playing sports like softball, horseshoes, and volleyball. Both paved and rustic trails for biking and hiking offer an opportunity for exercise. The 3.5 miles of paved trails lead back to the town of Larimore, making it easy to get to and from town. The campground features 144 sites with water and electric hookups for tent camping and RV use. Modern facilities are available, and the RV sites feature electric, water, and sewer hook-ups. For the Larimore Dam Recreation Area, admission is $5 a day or $25 a year, and camping is $25 a night or $150 a week. Myra Arboretum The 26-acre Myra Arboretum, also known as Larimore Arboretum, adjoins the Turtle River's south branch. Established in the late 1970s, it's part of a large conservation project that features over 500 varieties of trees and shrubs. The arboretum has been revitalized in recent years through partnerships and grants. Over $17,000 in outside funding has been secured to maintain the arboretum. Larimore Golf Course Image via Flickr by Chris Urbanowicz The Larimore Golf Course, a challenging nine-hole course that crosses the river, is just past the dam. It's a 36-par public course with 3,066 yards of golf from the longest tees. The course opened in 1960 and features a clubhouse with a full-service restaurant. Check out the hills, flowing creek, oak trees, and wildlife. Green fees are $17.50 for a round. All of the recreation options around Larimore Dam, including the Myra Arboretum and Larimore Golf Course, are connected to the city of Larimore by 3.5 miles of paved bicycle trails. The trails allow visitors to visit the recreation areas on foot or by bicycle, adding another element of enjoyment to the day. Avalon Theater Visit the historic Avalon Theater in downtown Larimore. Originally opened in 1925 as the Grand Theatre, the building was remodeled in 1938 and renamed the Avalon. Check out the art deco details in the marquee, box office, entry doors, and interior. The building operates as a one-screen movie theater and is home to live theater groups. Because the Avalon is the only remaining building in Larimore's downtown with original art deco features, it's been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 350-seat theater is located at 210 Towner Ave. Larimore City Parks Larimore's parks offer a place for recreation regardless of the season. The city pool opens seven days a week starting in June, and admission is just $3 a day, or they also offer a $40 annual pass. In the winter, weather and ice permitting, the skating rink is available for use. The park, along with the pool and ice skating rink, is found at 700 Towner Ave. Turtle River State Park Camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fishing, and mountain biking are among the fun things to do at Turtle River State Park, which is about 8 miles from Larimore. The state park was constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Set on 775 acres, Turtle River State Park has many options year round. It's a great place to sit back and enjoy the diverse wildlife population, as well as one of the waterfalls near Grand Forks. The Turtle River is stocked with rainbow trout and ready to be fished. You can also hike or mountain bike on the 12 miles of multi-use trails along the river and over the forested hills. In the winter, you can use these trails for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. There's also an amazing hill for sledding when the snow flies. Take a break in the warming house in the winter months or at a picnic area or playground in the warmer months. The park offers campsites and cabin rentals for those who'd like to extend their visit. Stop by the visitor center for more information. Admission is $7 a day or $35 for an annual pass. Camping is $17 to $30 a night, with cabins at $65 a night. The park also has facilities available to rent for special events  as well as shelters for spring to fall picnics. Larimore City Hall The 1890 Larimore City Hall was the first brick building in town and is the oldest surviving city-owned structure. It served as city hall and later as the town's opera house. The two-and-a-half story building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in its centennial year and has been a museum since the 1960s. Open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the museum houses historic displays focusing on the military, music, one-room schoolhouses, and antiques. City Hall is located at 398 Towner Ave., with an admission price of only $1 per person. Larson's Drive Inn In business since 1980, this tiny seasonal drive-in features a variety of specialty burgers, fries, and ice cream treats, including classic malts, shakes, and ice cream cones. Or try their popcorn shrimp, jumbo shrimp, or fish and chips specials. Enjoy dinner and a movie with the family at this fine example of only a handful of remaining vintage drive-ins in North Dakota.
